Pantone reveals custom colour in honour of music legend, Prince
The Pantone Colour Institute has announced the release of a new custom colour to pay tribute to the international music icon, Prince, who passed away in April 2016. Dubbed “Love Symbol #2”, the purple hue was inspired by his custom-made Yamaha purple piano, which was scheduled to go on tour with him before his untimely death. It will be the official colour of the brand he left behind.
Throughout Prince’s career, he became indelibly associated with purple, from his album and 1984 film, Purple Rain, to his wardrobe. And Pantone, the world-renowned authority on colour and provider of colour systems, saw fit to honour the music superstar by memorialising the distinct shade.
“We are honoured to have worked on the development of Love Symbol #2, a distinctive new purple shade created in memory of Prince, ‘the purple one’,” said Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute. “A musical icon known for his artistic brilliance, Love Symbol #2 is emblematic of Prince’s distinctive style. Long associated with the purple family, Love Symbol #2 enables Prince’s unique purple shade to be consistently replicated and maintain the same iconic status as the man himself.”
Troy Carter, Entertainment Advisor to Prince’s Estate, added: “The colour purple was synonymous with who Prince was and will always be. This is an incredible way for his legacy to live on forever.”
